Jersey Heritage site wins major award at 2018 Jersey Construction Council Awards
The re-development of Charing Cross including the construction of the Premier Inn Hotel and regeneration of Pitt Street was a major award winner at the 2018 Jersey Construction Council annual awards that took place on Saturday 13 October at the Hotel de France.
Restricted access, conflicts from commercial, practical and heritage standpoints, different methods of design and construction, key stakeholder engagement, challenges with planning and ensuring the project was used to enhance the social environmental impact for the benefit of the local community were all overcome through the teams strong working relationships to produce a building of high quality, with innovative construction methods, strong environmental credentials, longevity all with a positive lasting impact on its neighbours and the wider community.
At the annual event attended by over 300 people, 11 awards were presented to individuals and organisations connected with a wide range of projects undertaken over the past 12 months.
Hosted once again by Karen Rankine those who attended were entertained by Sir Geoff Hurst MBE the only player to have ever scored a hat-trick in a World Cup Final. Sir Geoff gave his view on the “beautiful” game and the opportunities for the current England squad. Other entertainment on the night was provided by Wayne Ellington a recent contestant on The Voice UK and Siren, a 4-piece acoustic electric violin girl band.
The gala event this year started the 2018 Construction Week, that will see the Council exhibiting at the forthcoming Skills Show where students from local skills will be able to undertake interactive activities covering various skills in the industry. Council members will also be completing another DIY SOS project which this year will be at the St Helier Methodist Centre where member firms will be providing a number of services to update the café and community area at the centre.
As always, the Brick Foundation was also a key beneficiary of the awards evening, which held a raffle and auction which raised a significant amount for the charity.
The 11 awards presented at the gala dinner highlighted the extensive range of experience and talent and shows that construction is a key local industry and continues to plan for the future, whilst recognising young achievers and innovative ideas that will be crucial in the development of the islands built environment.
It was also a successful night for Women in Construction with the first ever female winner of the Highlands College/Skills Jersey Star of the Future Award going to Olivia Methven-Higgins from Camerons.
Also a first time winner was Granite Le Pelley who received the Comprop Business of the Year with Over 10 Employees Award.
Other projects that were recognized on the night included the residential property of Logie Point that won the Dimplex Project of the Year Up To £1m award and the Hospital MRI Scanner which won the Pentagon Project of the Year Award between £1-£5million. The Jersey Electricity Sustainability Award went to the Premier Inn project.
Martin Holmes, Chairman of the Jersey Construction Council welcomed Chief Executive of the States of Jersey, Charlie Parker to the event and said that he hoped that he would take away a clear impression of a buoyant and highly skilled industry that will be a key delivery partner in achieving the Government’s strategic aims announced over the last week with the launch of the Proposed Common Strategic Policy.
The Chairman also stated that whilst latest economic reports issued shows a buoyant industry, clear challenges remain to be addressed before the industry can confidently predict that we have a sustainable industry based around a long term pipeline of opportunities that will allow the industry to plan for and provide a high quality Island infrastructure delivered by local talent.
